sholay

There can be no review of Sholay. It is the greatest story ever told in Indian cinema. There can only be a comment on whether the 3D re-release is up to the standard of this epic. Sadly, the 3D is no more than a gimmick, adding a few thrills to some action sequences. It makes things pop out in a few scenes here and there. But this is what you call a blessing in disguise. At least it’s given some of us a chance to revisit this grand action adventure on the big screen. And that is totally paisa vasool.

Sholay is a lesson in film making. It’s a fact that we used to make epic movies, once upon a time. Modern mega productions like Dhoom 3 pale in comparison to the thrills and spills of this Ramesh Sippy adventure. That you’re watching Sholay in 3D is a minor bonus. It would’ve been awesome had it actually added real depth to the great western panorama captured in Sholay’s 70 mm. But at least we got Amjad Khan’s Gabbar Singh in 3D.

You can’t really add valuable criticism to the film or its cast or the efforts of the crew. This film, four decades after its first release, still looks fresher than anything running in theaters right now. Go ahead and relive some of Dharmendra’s finest swash buckling moments, Amitabh Bachchan’s indelible swagger, Hema Malini’s joie de vivre, Jaya Bachchan’s quiet charm and above all, Sanjeev Kumar’s unparalleled intensity. This timeless classic is a must watch, with or without the 3D.
