Rekha Dhasmana Uniyal | The Legendry Singer of Uttarakhand Biography in English

Rekha Dhasmana Uniyal is a famous folk singer from Uttarakhand, India. She has been awarded by the “Gopal Babu Goswami Legendry Singer Award” in 2016, by “Young Uttarakhand Cine Awards“. She had sung many super hit Garhwali, Kumauni, and Jaunsari songs, i.e., “Hey Darji Dida” and she is one of the best Uttarakhandi singer who got the fame, and recognition from her debut Kumauni song “mera baju ranga rang bechari” which was the big hit of that time.

Rekha Dhasmana Uniyal was born on 9 March 1964 in Chhatauda village of Pauri Garhwal. Her mother’s name is Mrs. Kamala Dhasmana and father’s name is Mr. Lokesh Dhasmana. (Both parents are no longer in this world), only 2 years after the birth of Rekha, the whole family had shifted and was settled in Delhi.

Rekha Dhasmana Uniyal did her schooling from Jain Vidya Mandir in Delhi and after that she did her graduation from Delhi University.

She has been fond of music since her childhood and she remembers the days when the family used to visit to their native village back to Pauri Garhwal during the play of Ramlila, small Rekha would be the center of special attraction due to her singing in Ramlila and everyone was so crazy about her singing that she used to sing songs everyday, on public request.

Rekha tells that “I was very fond of singing songs since my childhood, that time I used to sing Hindi songs. As I have been a big fan of Lata ji and Rafi Sahab, I always kept on following their songs. I used to sing songs in Ramlila, then I used to be happy because of applause all around. In my school time, college time, I became famous by singing songs, as each program was incomplete without me. Then I had to Got a chance to sing in Cassette, 1983 to sing with Mohan Singh Manral ji, the song was “Meru Baju Rangarang Bichri”, and “Mailai Bio Kya Karo”, then these songs became a huge hit, followed by Late Gopal Babu with Goswami ji When I got a chance to sing, I got a chance to sing with him like “O Bhina ​​Kaske Jaanu Davaarhata”. I also sang comedy songs like “Meru Budaya Ku Bio Cha”, “Jukham Lagyunch” and many more.

I sung with Chandra Singh Rahi Ji, Jagdish Bakrola Ji , Krishnasinh Panwarji, Devraj Rangeela ji, Vijay Sailani ji, Santosh Khetwal ji, Harish Madhur ji, Narendra Singh Negi ji, Bhagwati Pokhriyal ji, and Pratap Singh Bafla. After marriage I went to Mumbai and settled their with my husband.

After going to Mumbai, I was engrossed in my household, but meanwhile my husband supported me for my singing and he encouraged me for stage programs. Once I narrated Garhwali songs to my guru ji when I was learning classical music from him in Mumbai, I was very happy when he said that “you sing very well you, have a god gifted voice and you must continue singing”. My guru name was Mr. Mohan Lal Barot, he was from Madhya Pradesh. I learned a lot about music from him.

With the passage of time the children grew up, their education was completed. Then my husband Rakesh Uniyal ji, a big supporter of my singing asked me to reconnect with music industry and get connected with the crowd, he said, you must carry forward your art, God has given you such a good tone, take it forward, then with his motivation I started doing stage programs. Got to learn folk music and Mangal from Dr. Madhuri Badthwal ji. I also decided to take this great knowledge forward and in today’s time I have taught many children and women, nowadays the Mangal has spread everywhere.

Today, due to the tireless efforts of her and Dr. Madhuri Badthwal ji, the new generation has again adopted Mangal in a new form in every marriage.

When she was asked for her unique name, which has both Dhasmana and Uniyal, then she replied , “I am Rekha Dhasmana Uniyal, so I am Dhasmana from parental family and when I started singing, I was Dhasmana which is known to my audience but I married to a Uniyal family, so instead to changing my sir name I just added  the Uniyal after my known name that my audience could not get confuse.

Although Rekha Dhasmana Uniyal has been honored with many of the awards, but when she was awarded with the prestigious “Gopal Babu Goswami Legendary Singer Awards”, in 2016 by “Young Uttarakhand Cine Awards”, she says it was the best moment of her life.
