At Rudra Prayag the Alaknanda meets the Mandakini River. The confluence is named after God Shiva also known as Rudra.
According to a legend, Sati was reborn as Parvati as the daughter of Himalaya, after she self-immolated herself in protest of the insult of God Shiva. In spite of Himalaya’s protests, Parvati performed rigorous penance to get the boon of becoming Shiva’s wife in the new birth too.
